Collection of my thoughts

Over the course of my practice, I would sometimes reflect on various sutiations I came across. I thought to write down some of my learnings that might be useful to other researchers and designers. This is how the idea behid UX diary was born.

If a client has a service that you don’t have visibility on, ask them to demonstrate it. End-to-end. So that you can accurately estimate the time it will take you to redesign it.

Reporting UT insights

Fri, Jun 9, 2023

At one of the online short coursers on user research I learnt about a way to report research insights. NB: this would work if you’re doing a mix of generative qual and usability testing. For optimal reporting: 1. Show personas and their journey. 2. Put together a showreel demonstrating the interaction between a participant and a product, with their quotes and showing the problem areas. The showreel should encapsulate the overall insight from qualitative study very well. 3. Full-blown deck with all findings to supplement the above.

Perpetual debate

The client insists upon changes that will ruin UX. Should you do the changes or express your personal opinion, refuse and insist on your approach? The client is insisting upon changes that will ruin the user experience. Should you make the changes or express your personal opinion, refuse, and insist on your approach? You can (and should) try to find common ground and suggest the best way to resolve the issue. However, if the client is unwilling to listen and insists on doing things their way, 99% of the chances it is not worth the battle. You may spend countless hours in meetings trying to persuade them and explain how things should work to ensure the best possible user experience. Not to mention the amount of frustration you’ll feel because of your emotional attachment to the project (yes, and it is okay). What should you do? Voice your concerns and suggest the best solution. You might do it 2-3 times. If the client still insists on the changes, make them, but ensure that you have documented that this is not the recommended approach. Save your nerve cells, even if it means that users will be frustrated while using the product.

Manage the expectations

Mon, 13 Mar, 2023

When the client comes to you with a request, and the scope seems to be too big for a given timeline, you should be able to manage their expectations and show them realistic estimated time it will take to complete the work. Convince them that the quality can’t be achieved with speed. Always suggest what you can do in the timeframe requested. Don’t just tell them that the scope is too big and expect them to reduce it. Reduce it yourself, come up with a strategy and approach that will still deliver good quality result.

Qual research data analysis

Sat, 4 Mar, 2023

To save time on research analysis, you can define the themes and tags beforehand, since you already know the research objectives and questions. You can tag the findings as you make notes or debrief. Prepare the Miro board with the themes, and put the notes directly on the post-its under each theme. Also, doing the analysis as the study progresses helps you to understand whether you’re asking the right questions. I think this approach will work perfectly well, if you’re focusing the research around the well-defined problem. However, if the problem area is unknown or the research objectives are too broad, there will be more themes emerging as you conduct the research and once you start the analysis.

Improve your presentation

Mon, 9 Jan, 2023

When presenting a research report or a deck to a client, create a structure first. Define key points, highlights, most important/interesting things and outliers. Remember, that the client will have the deck/report after the presentation and can always read it in detail. Be concise. Ask them if they want a brief or a detailed presentation before the call/meeting, and be prepared for both.

Capture all points discussed

Wed, Jan 11, 2023

MFUs (Meeting follow-ups)/meeting minutes are extremely helpful to capture and keep track of every change, approval or request. It is especially handy when dealing with clients who keep changing their requirements or are inconsistent with their decisions. Take time and write down the MFUs after every meeting/call you have with clients, so that you can refer back to it, if needed. It also helps you to protect you from accusations, if any, or misunderstandings.
